Why A Writing Workshop?

First, INSPIRATION

Nothing inspires more than meeting with other writers

Second, STIMULATION

Nothing stimulates more than meeting with other writers.

Third, FEEDBACK

Nothing is more important to a writer than the feedback from the community.

Here is the sticky stickling point though. Many writing teachings are loaded with judgement about your work. In most cases, it's nearly impossible to submit your writing to a group and not shake in your shoes about being judged but my work with you isn't a literary contest. My workshops are about getting to the heart of your deepest truth and rendering that truth into words. We go far deeper than judgments about "good writing." Great truth is great writing, period.

Four spots are open for the Portland Intensive. In Pittsburgh, we have space for ten writers. FInd your way to the Teachings page on this site, check it out and join us!

From '07 - Freedom

Sometimes I'll go back, looking through earlier posts on this weblog which has been around since 2005. Today I found this posting and it felt just right as we pull together our 2010 intensive and even prepare for another in Pittsburgh.

You must want this very badly.
You must ache for it.

You must be unable
to sleep at night,
screamed awake by the terror
of your own unknown.

You must be blurry eyed,
alone, out of ideas,
excuses, blame
and even time.

You must want to live.
You must love life
You must cling to the rosy hue of possibility,
once tasted on your own laughing tongue.

You must suffer until
it is enough already.
You must have chosen to suffer
again and again and again,

until at 2 a.m.,3 a.m.
and again at 4 a.m.
you cry out,
ENOUGH!

Only then are you ready for freedom.

From this place you begin.
